Best of 2011: Car Ride

My sis & I acting silly before we hit the road

I wouldn’t call it the “best” but it was most certainly an adventure. My Sis and I had plans to spend a weekend in Vermont on a working trip. It was a mess from the moment we stepped into the DCA airport and found out that our boarding passes were denied because we were checking in at the wrong airport! A quick beeline to Dulles and we missed our flight by 10 minutes. After several flight cancellations, we were forced to continue our trip the next morning. Thus missing an entire vacation day. The following morning, we managed to make it as far as Philadelphia before we were derailed with more cancellations. By 2pm we were forced to rent a car and drive because there was absolutely no other flight options. $250 for that last minute, one way rental!!!

We hit the road by 4pm. I drove first shift and wouldn’t you know, this chyck was sleep 30 minutes in the road trip! After 6 hours I gave her the wheel, only for me to take it back after 3 hours because she was falling asleep behind the wheel. Needless to say, with rest stops and heavy fog, we didn’t get to our destination until 1am. We only had 6 hours to sleep before we had to report for duty.

Luckily, we had a smooth flight back home.

  1. Sounds pretty hectic and zany. Well, it's no fun when you run into so delays during a trip. It's also a good move that your sister switched with you when she started feeling sleepy – drowsy driving can be pretty dangerous.

Agreed. I've had more close calls than I care to recall regarding *almost* falling asleep behind the wheel. No joke.
